Features & Compatibility

The use of the hallucinogenic San Pedro cactus (Trichocereus peruvianus) dates back thousands of years. In Peru, its ceremonial use has continued uninterrupted for over 3,000 years. One of the earliest known depictions of this cactus appears in an engraving associated with the Chavín culture (ca. 1420–380 BCE).

San Pedro is well known for its psychoactive properties. The active compound found in this cactus is mescaline (3,4,5-trimethoxyphenethylamine), a naturally occurring psychedelic alkaloid. In traditional contexts, San Pedro has sometimes been used in combination with other sacred plants such as coca, tobacco, Brugmansia, and Anadenanthera.

Historical records indicate that monks of the pre-Inca cultures prepared a ceremonial mixture known as “cimora,” “achuma,” or “huachuma.” This preparation was reportedly used between approximately 900 BCE and 200 BCE for ritual and medicinal purposes.

Effects of Mescaline San Pedro (Trichocereus peruvianus)

The effects of this San Pedro species are often described as extremely powerful. For this reason, it is not considered suitable for recreational or social use. The experience can be intense and transformative on a spiritual and psychological level.

Many accounts suggest that the ego plays a central role during a mescaline experience. San Pedro is frequently described as a “mirror,” reflecting aspects of one’s inner self. Individuals with strong self-awareness may interpret the experience differently than those who have not deeply examined themselves. In some cases, perceptions of everyday life may shift dramatically.

Commonly reported effects include:

  • Changes in perception and worldview
  • More vivid and intensified colors
  • Objects appearing to glow, distort, or shift
  • Altered perception of time and space
  • The sensation that time slows down or stands still
  • Heightened sensory awareness, including synesthetic experiences
  • Emotional sensitivity and mood fluctuations
  • Profound personal insights
  • Mystical or spiritual experiences
  • The emergence of deeply rooted emotional themes

Within spiritual traditions, San Pedro is often associated with expanded awareness and the development of wisdom.

Not a Recreational Substance

San Pedro is not traditionally used for entertainment. It is regarded as a powerful entheogenic cactus with profound psychological effects. Experiences may involve intense visions, emotional release, and deep introspection.

Many people describe it as a process of inner cleansing and confrontation with long-carried emotional burdens. For this reason, traditional use emphasized respect, preparation, and a safe, guided setting.

What Makes San Pedro Psychedelic?

Mescaline is a naturally occurring psychedelic alkaloid. Its chemical structure resembles certain neurotransmitters in the human body, including compounds related to mood and perception. Because of this similarity, mescaline interacts primarily with serotonin and dopamine receptors in the brain, resulting in altered states of consciousness and perception.

In addition to mescaline, San Pedro contains other alkaloids that may contribute to the overall psychoactive profile.

Warning

Mescaline-containing plants may pose health risks, particularly when combined with certain medications, alcohol, or MAO inhibitors. Individuals with mental health conditions, or those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, should avoid exposure.

Always act responsibly and be aware of the legal regulations in your country regarding mescaline-containing plants.
