Features & Compatibility

With these unique Trichocereus pachanoi seeds, you can grow your own San Pedro cactus at home. San Pedro is a strong and resilient cactus species that grows slowly and requires relatively little water. Like other traditional entheogenic plants used by indigenous cultures of the Americas, it has a long and rich ceremonial history.

The use of the San Pedro cactus dates back thousands of years. In Peru, its ceremonial use has continued for over 3,000 years. One of the earliest known depictions of the cactus appears in an engraving associated with the Chavín culture (ca. 1420–380 BCE). San Pedro is known for containing mescaline (3,4,5-trimethoxyphenethylamine), a naturally occurring psychedelic alkaloid.

In traditional contexts, San Pedro has sometimes been used alongside other sacred plants such as coca, tobacco, Brugmansia, and Anadenanthera.

Growing Instructions

For best results, use a propagator or small indoor greenhouse.

Fill small plastic pots (approximately 5 cm) with sterilized soil. Place the seeds on top of the soil and gently press them down. Stand the pots in a shallow layer of boiled water and wait until the soil surface becomes moist. Remove the pots from the water and cover them with plastic wrap to maintain humidity.

The ideal temperature during germination is between 18°C and 23°C. Within several days to a few weeks, small green seedlings should appear.

After about four weeks, begin the hardening process. Make two small holes in the plastic wrap and gradually increase ventilation every other day. Once the environment inside matches the outside conditions, the plastic covering can be removed.

Water using boiled water or rainwater. Keep the soil lightly moist but avoid overwatering. Do not allow the seedlings to dry out completely. After approximately one year, the young cacti may be repotted. Handle the delicate taproot with great care.

If the cacti turn yellow, they require more light. If they turn reddish, reduce watering slightly. Always keep out of reach of children.
