Use

Rapé (pronounced ha-peh) is a traditional shamanic snuff from the Amazon. It consists of finely ground tobacco combined with other sacred plants and ashes and is administered through the nose using a special pipe.

If you wish to apply Rapé to yourself, you will need a self-applicator pipe called a Kuripe. To administer Rapé to another person, a Tepi pipe is used.

Below is an overview of the preparation and application process.

Requirements

• Rapé powder (from a trusted source)
• Kuripe (self-applicator pipe) or Tepi pipe
• A calm and comfortable space
• Tissue or handkerchief (for excess mucus)
• An intention or prayer (optional, but recommended for spiritual use)

Preparation

• Ensure both participants are calm and focused.
• The receiver may sit cross-legged or upright.
• Ask the receiver to breathe through the mouth and remain open to the experience.
• Hold a respectful intention. In shamanic traditions, Rapé is used for cleansing, healing, and focus.

Dosage

• Place a small amount of Rapé (approximately half a pea per nostril) into the Tepi pipe.
• Blow once into your hand to ensure the pipe is clear and free of clumps.

Application

• Place the narrow end of the Tepi pipe into one nostril of the receiver.
• The receiver slightly tilts the head forward and relaxes.
• Take a deep breath and blow the Rapé firmly but in a controlled manner into one nostril.
• Wait a few seconds and repeat for the other nostril.

Aftercare

• The receiver may keep the eyes closed and breathe deeply to allow the effects to settle.
• Strong reactions such as tearing, sneezing, or mucus release may occur — this is normal and considered part of the cleansing process.
• Allow time for grounding and offer water or tissues if needed.
