How to use rapé

Rapé (pronounced ha-peh) is a traditional Amazonian shamanic snuff made from finely ground tobacco and other plant materials. It is administered through the nose using a special pipe.

For self-application, a self-applicator pipe called a Kuripe is used. To administer rapé to another person, a Tepi pipe is required.

Below is a general guide including preparation, materials, and application steps.

What you will need

• Rapé powder (from a trusted source)
• A Kuripe (self-applicator) or Tepi pipe
• A calm and comfortable space
• A tissue or handkerchief (for excess mucus)
• An intention or prayer (optional, but recommended in spiritual practice)

Preparation

• Ensure both the giver and receiver are calm and focused
• The receiver may sit upright or in a cross-legged position
• Ask the receiver to breathe through the mouth and remain open to the experience
• Hold a respectful intention; in shamanic traditions, rapé is used for cleansing, healing, and focus

Dosage

• Place a small amount of rapé (about half a pea per nostril) into the Tepi pipe
• Blow gently into your hand first to check for blockages and ensure the pipe is clear

Administration

• Place the narrow end of the Tepi pipe into one nostril of the receiver
• The receiver tilts the head slightly forward and relaxes
• Take a deep breath and blow the rapé firmly but in a controlled manner into one nostril
• Wait a few seconds and repeat with the other nostril

Aftercare

• The receiver may keep their eyes closed and breathe deeply to allow the effects to settle
• Strong physical responses such as tearing, sneezing, or mucus release can occur — this is normal and often seen as a sign of cleansing
• Allow time for grounding and offer water or tissues if needed
