Peyote (Lophophora williamsii) seeds are highly viable and well suited for cultivation. This cactus species grows very slowly, and it can take several years before the plants reach maturity. Peyote is considered one of the oldest known psychedelic cacti. Archaeological findings, including preserved specimens discovered in burial sites and depictions in ancient cave art, date back to around 4000 BCE.

The Aztecs regarded Peyote as sacred and divine. Historically, it was used within spiritual and ceremonial contexts, as well as in traditional healing practices. Peyote has played an important role in indigenous cultures for thousands of years.

Growing Instructions

For best results, use a propagator or small indoor greenhouse.

Fill small plastic pots (approximately 5 cm) with sterilized soil. Place the seeds on top of the soil and gently press them down without burying them deeply. Stand the pots in a shallow layer of boiled water and wait until the surface of the soil becomes moist. Remove the pots from the water and cover them with plastic wrap to maintain humidity.

The ideal temperature during germination is between 18°C and 23°C. Within several days to a few weeks, small green seedlings should begin to appear.

After approximately four weeks, begin the hardening process. Make two small holes in the plastic wrap and gradually increase ventilation every other day. Once the environment inside matches the surrounding atmosphere, the plastic covering can be removed completely.

Water using boiled water or rainwater. Keep the soil lightly moist, avoiding both complete drying and overwatering. After about one year, the young cacti can be repotted. Handle the delicate taproot with extreme care.

If the cacti turn yellow, they require more light. If they begin to turn reddish, reduce watering slightly.

Storage Advice

Store this product in a cool, dark place such as a kitchen cupboard and keep out of reach of children.
